Solution Focused Hypnotherapy
Sometimes there’s no single thing wrong. Life has just become heavier than it used to be. We help you understand what’s happening in your mind, and help it find its way back to somewhere calmer and more settled.
● Usually 8 to 12 sessions
● Focused on where you want to be
● Relaxation track for home
Is this for you?
It might be worry that won’t switch off, or nights lying awake running through tomorrow. It might be a flatness where enjoyment used to be, a temper that’s shorter than you’d like, or confidence that has slowly drained away.
It might be checking and rechecking things until they feel right, or a stomach that always seems to react when you’re under strain. Or it might just be a sense that you’re not quite coping the way you used to.
We don’t see these as conditions to be managed. More often they’re a sign of how you’re relating to the world around you right now, and how much you’ve been carrying.
Understanding it
We each have a thinking part of the brain, which is good at weighing things up and finding answers, and an older, emotional part whose job is to keep us safe. When stress builds, that older part takes more control. It’s more cautious, more negative and quicker to spot threats, which is where a lot of anxiety, low mood and anger comes from.
A helpful way to picture it is a stress bucket. Every worry, every negative thought and every bad night tops it up. Good sleep, particularly the dreaming stage known as REM sleep, helps to empty it. But when the bucket gets too full, sleep is disturbed, the bucket stays full, and the older part of the brain stays in charge.
The encouraging part is that it works the other way too. Positive actions, time with people who are good for us and more hopeful thinking all help the brain move back towards balance. Hypnotherapy adds to that by giving the mind a deep, settled rest.
How it works
Every plan is shaped around you, but this is how things usually go.
Step 1
You can book your first appointment through our website. This first consultation is paid, and there’s no pressure to commit to anything beyond it.
Step 2
We’ll talk through what’s brought you here and explain, in plain English, how what you’re going through relates to what’s happening in your brain. We’ll go through how the sessions work, and you’ll experience a light, gentle trance so you know what it feels like. If you’d like to carry on, we’ll invite you to book, and suggest a relaxation track to listen to at home to help prepare your mind.
Step 3
We start with what’s been good since we last met, because noticing what’s working matters. We’ll ask you to rate where you are on a simple scale, and explore what would be different if the change you want had already happened. Then you’ll settle into hypnotherapy, which gives your mind a chance to rest deeply and to practise feeling the way you’d like to feel.
Step 4
There’s no fixed number. We carry on until you’re high on that scale, or until you feel the change is enough. The relaxation track is yours to keep using for as long as it helps.
What can change
Change usually shows up in ordinary ways first.
Falling asleep more easily and waking up feeling more rested.
Less time stuck in worry and going over the same thoughts.
Interest and enjoyment drifting back into the things you used to like.
Feeling less wound up, and less likely to snap at the people you care about.
More confidence in situations that used to throw you.
Because each session starts there, many people find they begin noticing it on their own.
Good to know
Not unless you want to. Solution focused work concentrates on where you want to be and what’s already helping, rather than going back over everything that went wrong.
Yes. If you’re seeing your GP or taking medication, please carry on. If you have physical symptoms, such as ongoing stomach problems, or anything new or worrying, please see your GP first so other causes can be ruled out. Hypnotherapy works alongside medical care, never instead of it.
No. Hypnosis is nothing like the stage shows, and nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to do. Most people describe it as being deeply relaxed, a bit like the moments just before you drift off to sleep. You can hear everything, you can move if you need to, and you can open your eyes whenever you like.
If you’re in crisis or worried about your safety, please call 999 or go to your nearest A&E. You can also call Samaritans at any time, day or night, on 116 123.
If things have felt heavier than they should for a while, you’re welcome to get in touch. We’ll talk it through and see what might help.
